Our story - freedom, history and the history of juneteenth
This Juneteenth, we had the privilege of experiencing history where it happened—right here in Jackson Ward. From an inspiring tour of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church to a powerful preview of Songs of Truth: The Awakening at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, these moments reminded us why preserving and sharing our stories matters."Freedom now is coming and no man can block the way." Those powerful words from Keni B. Fine's "Mama's Gone to Freedom" capture the spirit of "Songs of Truth – The Awakening," which made its debut at Jackson Ward's historic Hippodrome Theater on Saturday, June 20.
"Truth" is a Broadway-bound developmental musical inspired by the remarkable life and work of Sojourner Truth, the renowned 19th-century abolitionist and advocate for the rights of women and African Americans.Cheddar Jackson had the opportunity to experience a special preview of the music on June 19 at the Black History and Cultural Center, located at 122 West Leigh Street, where acclaimed performer Desiree Roots and company offered an inspiring glimpse into the production. The date of the preview was especially meaningful. June 19—better known as Juneteenth—marks the day when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas at the close of the Civil War. Now recognized as a federal holiday, Juneteenth celebrates freedom, resilience, and the continuing pursuit of equality in America.
Continuing the weekend's journey through history, Cheddar Jackson also joined a guided tour of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church at 14 West Duval Street. Founded in 1867 by the legendary Reverend John Jasper, the church remains one of Richmond's most treasured institutions. Led by church historian Benjamin Ross, the tour highlighted artifacts preserved in the John Jasper Memorial Room & Museum, which opened in 1926 and continues to tell the story of faith, leadership, and community that has shaped generations.
